A Fool’s Gold

A Poem

By Nomthandazo Nxabela

With an unwavering heart I stood
through your seasons
Though
bent over
or bending back
I vowed as long as I could

And I stood
Until my heart turned pastel
Counting hues
within the cold of your blues
While uttered mantras
came in rhythmic declarations of:
“I love yous” said in between
I felt textures on the brown of your skin
and I praised this love reflected on your melanin
As I called you my king

Oh! But I still stand
Heart, a matt gold
with a sinister flicker of bold
Dancing in my bounty
as I strut my stuff void of lessons old
into the arms of the next fool
