Beautifully blue

A Poem

By Mehdi Bagheri

Johannesburg (2018):

Staring at the blue sky
I ask
Remember the first time
You became my favourite colour?

Tehran (1996):

So Mehdi
Do you love me?

Yeah I do but
Let’s paint

You say sure
Why not?

You give me the blue
You take the yellow

I paint the sky
And you paint the sun

I get a pat on the back
As you say

Oh boy!
I never saw a sky
So beautifully blue
In my entire life

A few days later
I’m told that you’re gone

Where? Until when?
I ask grandma

He’s gone to the sky
Forever, to start a new life

Oh Grandma
Please don’t cry

I promise
He’s happy

Cause he told me
He really loves the blue sky

Johannesburg (2018):

I only realize now
Why you took the yellow
Painted the sun
And gave me the blue

It’s drizzling now
And that’s all your teardrops
You show the rainbow
Using sun and your teardrops

Cause there’s no other way to say
There’s bent colour pencils in the sky

You’re still happy
Despite the cry

Now let me say
What I heard you say

Oh boy!
I never saw a sky
So beautifully blue
In my entire life

In loving memory of my uncle, Hossein Moharrer, who made me fall in love with the light blue colour after he gave me colour pencils for my 7th birthday.
