An Artistic Expression
By Mongezi Ncombo
Mongezi Ncombo’s body of work is an experimental illustration which examines the intersecting movement by the people during migration, tracing their similarities to the patterns, shape and contours of the map.
His artworks are composed of the combination of the contour line and the gesture drawing technique. This combination of techniques constructs the intersecting lines which represent the various roads utilized by the people during migration. It is commenting on their shuttered realities of the past which resulted from adapting to a new reality in the process of self-reinvention.
He then recomposes the abstract pattern to project the scenarios of the city dwellers on a daily basis. This theme has been intrigued by his life as a city dweller and how humankind has always been attached to the claims of the land they live in which gave birth to the brutality of colonization and xenophobia knowing very well that we did not realise where we were during our early stages of development in life and we are bound to lose everything we ever claimed or possessed through passing away, hence you notice an unstable atmosphere in his work.
The instability in his work represents the orbiting of the earth and it’s ever-changing times which contradicts the movement of the inhabitants.
