A Poem
By Shameelah Khan
We escaped in the afternoon,
In your ever-green Uno
Bags stacked to the boot-brim
You snuck me out of school
I didn’t know
That you would take me
On a special trip
Tripping over the joys
Of my tiny feet
In brown-polished school shoes
The Tuffy kind,
‘Coke’ in your cup
And boerewors rolls along the way
Dad couldn’t reach us
And you didn’t mind
As long as the wind brushed through our hair
Singing to Mariah Carey
It became scary
When you were too joyous
And then
Upset
At the little things
