Nostalgia’s Tides

A Poem

By Miriam Gayize

You look at a captured past
A past where you are small
The sea behind you
A reminder of Nostalgia’s tides
You stare at your younger eyes
Blind to the world’s darkness
Your teeth, still growing
Your gums, healthy
Your tongue, a blue shade
Your voice, a fearless blade
Your heart, carelessly beating
with unnerving kindness

You swam, or rather jumped about
In the sea’s waters
And ran back to Mama
Her smile made you smile
Her being, an irredeemable experience
You wish to return to this memory
To experience her again
To feel the tides at your feet
To smile with crooked teeth
To stain your tongue
To speak without falter
To love without condition
