Tchaikovsky Experience

A Poem

By Alun Robert

Was taken by Father
to see “The Music Lovers”
at the Arts Theatre, Cambridge.
Richard Chamberlain as Tchaikovsky,
Glenda Jackson his wife.

They played out the “1812” finalé
with great volume, intense expression
as cannonballs blew off
heads fixed onto stakes.
Yet this was a matinée

but was consumed by the “Overture”
expanding my senses and mind
while Tchaikovsky went insane
took his own troubled life

then there were mad sex scenes
turned me red in embarrassment.
Glanced at my Father,
expect he did too
but it was dark in the Arts.

Was our last adventure together
to see a movie though
can’t reprise that experience
now that he’s gone.
