Benisazi na ukuba ndinosana?

A Poem By Zanele Meth

This is a poem written in IsiXhosa, my mother tongue. It captures the feelings I had when I realised that I could write poetry in my native language. I compared the feeling to giving birth at a young age, which is seen as a disgrace in my culture. In this poem I urge the community to accept my child who is my gift.

Benisazi na ukuba ndinosana?
Ubuyazi na ukuba ndizele?
Usana lwam aluna sini
Ningasoze nizibone nezalo iintsini
Iinyawo zakhe azikalungel’ukuhamba
Kwaye akakalungel’ukulibon’ilanga
Yiyo loo nto xa ndihamba ndimshiya
Ndiye ndoyika ukuzihlaza
Kaloku unguye umsebenzi wezam izandla
Uzizo nezam iingcinga
Ekwazalisa nelam idinga

Yena akafani nabanye abantwana
Esibhedlele oomongikazi bathi akanasandi unesingqi
Inene akafani nabanye abantwana
Elakhe ilizwi livakala kunina
Yena akakwaz’ukukhwaza
Uyahlebeza, akayeki
Ebusuku uyandililela athi mandikhangele usiba

Uyazilawula abuye andixake
Minazana ithile ndazithathela usiba suka lathi cwaka
Ndalucenga lwathi cwaka, kodwa andikayeki ukuzama
Ndiyaluqeqesha nangona ndandiluqhusheka phantsi kwehempe
Sele luzama ukuqhabalaka ndiluqhushele
Ngoku ndiluzele

Abadala bathi, “Olungakhaliyo lufel’embelekweni”
Naso ke iskhalo so sana lwam siveni
Nal’usana lwam lwamkeleni.
