A Poem By Thandolwethu Khumalo – 19 years old

Although it is rather impossible to capture the beauty and scars of our country, I make a noble attempt to express my perception of the history, present and future of the Republic of South Africa.

I can now move my body, fearless of boundaries. My melanin face shining so brightly, no more disguises. The syllables of my name, no more attached to inhumane shame, rather pride and joy. Signifying that I have achieved in place to honour those that once came who were strongly brave. Oppression of another is now a tale told around a campfire, not seeking to aggravate nor condone hate, yet so to enlighten and encourage the after spring, to celebrate the sacrifices made by the courageous men and women back in their hey-days. We now define nature’s charming feature, and hand in hand we bounce toward a blinding future. We carry pride at heart and wisdom in mind from history because now we know who we are, children free from the burden, destined to be the moon among the stars.
